voice of (2006)
There is an intimacy that arises when someone sings to you directly. This doesn't seem to happen very often, perhaps only from someone very close to you. Voice Of explores the tradition of people singing songs to each other, on a personal level, and presents the sounds found inside the songs. This is a stereo version of the piece, originally for eight speakers.
Voice Of has been performed at The Electronic Music Studio Concert Series, Goldsmiths College, March 06; Sonic Arts Network's Expo June 06, Manchester; and the Brighton Fringe Festival, May 07.
from play (2004)
From Play explores some of my favourite sounds. The piece unfolded as I played with sounds to discover their qualities. Sounds combine and interact, as wordless voices and characters, to create a story of sounds for each listener to interpret.
From Play has been performed at the Summer Festival of Music with University of Birmingham's New Music Ensemble and BEAST, The Crescent Theatre, Birmingham 04 and The Electronic Music Studio Concert Series, Goldsmiths College, London, 05.
i'm alive here (2006)
I'm Alive Here offers some stories from a few young women loosely on the subject of menstruation. Stories interweave, comments and ideas are dispersed, and the listener is placed amongst these conversations. Whilst I'm Alive Here focuses on only a few women, and there are as many truths on this subject as there are experiences.
I'm Alive Here was performed at Sound In Space, a concert at The Space, London, August 06.
piece of wood (2004)
Piece of Wood was a dance and electroacoustic music project. Music: Sarah Owen, Dancers: Nick Janaway and Sara Kelly
The music and dance were developed hand-in-hand: Sarah came up with the sound material (mainly recordings of wood sounds, hence the title) while Sara and Nick came up with the movements, but all three of us had equal input and responsibility for composition and choreography.
Piece of Wood was performed at the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham, June 2004, and also as part of a "Circus to Iraq" charity fundraiser, in a pub car park in Lampeter, Wales.
compact mirror (2007)
Compact Mirror is intended for performance/broadcast in an urban environment, by 8 performers carrying speakers. The year 2007 marks the first time in history that urban residents outnumber the rural population. Compact Mirror questions our definitions of urban and rural sounds - are they formed by our fantasies or by our prejudices? As a listener you may wish to draw links between sounds, or equally you may create boundaries. Through this process you may decide what you value.
Compact Mirror was performed in May 07 at the Brighton Fringe Festival.
